Local Activities

Norman has volunteered for many years with Mathcounts, an annual math competition for middle schoolers in Collier, Lee, Hendy, Glades and Charlotte Counties, sponsored by the Florida Engineering Society, Calusa Chapter. He has co-chaired past competitions and has traveled to the state competition in Orlando.

Norman has helped out for many years in the Collier County public schools.

Serving most recently on the Collier County Advisory Board of the National Academy Foundation, promoting engineering as a career choice to area high schoolers. He is a member of the Golden Gate High School NAF Academy of Engineering Advisory Board.

He also served as a mentor for the first Entrepreneurial Advisory Council for Collier County Public Schools. He served on the judging panel for student presentations for the initial program held at Barron Collier High School.

In years past, he has worked with the Math Superstars program at Sea Gate Elementary School where he helped students enhance their math skills and learn engineering concepts. He led an effort at Sea Gate to map the school’s nature habitat, an interactive natural and planted area on the school’s property. Students took photos, drew sketches and measured the habitat area. Norman created maps to illustrate the vegetation in this environment.

He also participates in Career Days at schools, introducing students to the fields of engineering. At the high school level, he has been a guest lecturer on transportation and civil engineering topics.

About Trebilcock
Trebilcock Services

Norman is on the Board of Directors for Love A Child, which is a humanitarian organization serving the children of Haiti. Norman has traveled several times to Haiti since the 2010 earthquake to help design Miracle Village and Marketplace, a 78-acre sustainable community being developed by Love a Child, Inc. (LAC). TCS provides planning, design and technical support services from Naples.

Norman is part of an Engineering Ministries International (EMI) team that includes retired Collier County Stormwater Director John Boldt and Naples surveyors George Hackney and Guy Adams. The EMI team provides surveying, planning and engineering services on the site located in Fond Parisien, east of Port Au Prince. The Miracle Village community has over 500 homes designed to be hurricane and earthquake resident.

“This project is an important part of the rebuilding effort in Haiti,” Norman explains. “This new community has helped the injured and homeless in Haiti begin to move forward with their lives. It was incredibly rewarding to work with Love a Child on this project.”

The project includes recreation and education facilities, as well as commercial space and preserves areas. The Marketplace is a 16-acre commercial area creating jobs for residents of Miracle Village and the surrounding Fond Pariesien community. The Miracle Village and The Marketplace is adjacent to the orphanage run by Love a Child which is home to 70 children, a radio station, medical clinic, Tilapia farm and regional food distribution warehouse.

The Love a Child outreach program includes 13 schools where they educate and feed over 5,000 children daily, and food distribution that reaches thousands of Haitian families.

When the earthquake hit the country in January 2010, the existing orphanage property was temporarily transformed into the largest mobile transitional hospital in Haiti, treating thousands of patients in the first few months.

Established by the Dominican Government, the hospital was run with help from the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and other U.S. medical teams. Norman and the design team worked alongside the mobile hospital effort as they provided their engineering services.
